This piece was inspired by a poem about my consideration of Motherhood that just struck me while I was walking in our garden. It poured into my mind without thought and I put the words into the composition and felt the piece (and emotion) forming into 3-D- an emanation off the canvas. Since the feeling and desire for Motherhood has such a multi layered range, I wanted to painting to be multilayered, too. I sculpted the concept out of various acrylic materials , I felt the strength of Stephen and I growing together, as if we were two trees and we could be holding a seed (in the form of a nesting egg). The child inside is sheltered by the shell, made out of irridescent paper that obscures the view as the viewer moves around the painting. He is gently forming the supporting structure (as he always does :) and I am the gentle protector and nurturer, holding and sheilding with my branches from above.
The piece has also incorporated into it real leaves embedded into acrylic, skeletal leaves highlighted with metallic powders and much glistening translucence. It is a contrasting play on 2D and 3D, matt and glossy glittering irridescence. Its unfinished right now, but here are some sneak peak previews of other angles.
